Tom Rees- I was a victim of multi-year depression -- and didn't even know it
I have included a video presentation about depression, because I believe that most alcoholics and some drug addicts are simply depressed. I say “simply depressed” — but nothing is simple. Convincing an alcoholic or addict they need help is very difficult. Make no mistake about it, however — the disease of addiction is as bad and as serious as having cancer. If you let it go long enough and don’t “catch” it, like cancer, it will kill its victim– plain and simple.
I believe, however, that addiction as a disease likely begins with a mood disorder, primarily depreswsion and the accompanying anxiety. I was a victim of this but was fortunate enough to have the depression treated, and that made any addiction issues easier to treat (in my case). If addicts or their families were better educated, this would perhaps lead to a more proactive attitude towards treatment. If you think you have a problem with drugs or alcohol, take it from one who had depression and anxiety which led to self medication. Get the depression and anxiety treated — and you may be blessed as I am, to have the urge to drink or use all but disappear. I am living proof this can happen. See the videos about depression below.
