Being Brave when It Is Time To Speak Up

My last post involved speaking up and making some positive noise if you have had a mental illness and conquered it or are dealing with it well. The point was we desperately need to remove the negative stigma of mental illness. You are about to watch a video of a woman confronted by a flasher and not tolerating it one bit. This same level of energy needs to go into our anti-stigma campaign:

Next time … Read More

Stress Leads to Alcohol Abuse and in Turn Depression Makes You Feel Worse and Can Get Suicidal, Especially For Vets

Author’s note: More Vietnam Vets have died from suicide than died in the whole Vietnam war because help was not available to many of them and Post Traumatic Stress took them down. Now we are losing 5 boys a day returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, not because help isn’t available, but because many of them have prided themselves on being tough. Needing a psychiatrist is seen as a weakness they are too proud to go

“Rag” Magazines vs. Science: Are the Rat Population Studies True?

One need only look at the racks stuffed full of “rag magazines” at the head of most market checkout lanes to know they are there because they sell. They sell the surprise and shock of a headline that announces somebody who is or was “on top” of their game has shaved all their hair off, married a mooch, or gotten busted for a whole bunch of drugs that were discovered when their car was searched … Read More

Have You Found That Maybe You Aren't As Happy in Life as You Thought You Should Be?

I just watched a 12 minute motivational speech by a guy named Shawn Achors (and I usually can not bear those speeches a la Tony Robbins where  people have been promised their whole miserable life can be fixed in 3 hours) but this guy was different. He posits that our society is basically broken because of the way we are raised to always compete and advance. Specifically he made up an example by saying what … Read More

Raising a Child Perfectly Does NOT Guarantee a Perfect Child

The article I have written voices my disagreement with the bulk of thinking by a writer named Laurie Couture. What follows is one of her statements about how awful it is that childrens’ rights are ignored. The author goes on to suggest that if children had all the rights they should have and we could meet all their needs (i.e a world of no spanking, no traditional school discipline, etc) –  it would likely result … Read More

Maj. Gen. Mark Graham speaks openly about mental health and his “family” of men and women in service. It is a start, but hardly enough to reverse what is really happening.

The other day on the radio I heard some shocking statistics about depression and suicide as it relates to the military. Personally, I don’t think there could be … Read More

Don’t Die Crying — When the moment arrives, how will YOU feel?

A very common heart problem is called an “arrhythmia” — in fact I am fairly sure I read somewhere that upwards of 15% of people or more experience heart arrhythmia at some point in their life. “Cardiac arrhythmia” is a term that encompasses a whole bunch of different conditions that can occur when the electric circuitry of the heart muscle is thrown out of whack and results in one’s heart beat becoming too fast or … Read More
