I wanted to write about a simple, straightforward, “just do it” topic today. It has to do with dogs and how important they can be to us.
First of all, briefly, in an earlier post I suggested that anybody who is depressed should try to create a mission in life. Well for me (with the help of my dog) the entrepreneurial project I have been working on for 18 months launched this week. It is … Read More
In Hollywood, it seems almost accepted that a certain number of stars will die because of drugs or alcohol. While I didn’t follow Giraldo, I do find it amazing that days before he relapsed he was scheduled to do a recovery gig. I can’t emphasize in this blog enough how badly addiction really needs to be seen as a disease — just like cancer — and more attention needs to be given … Read More
You were probably discussing the subject at some point in the past when someone remarked “oh, he’s an addict” or “she’s an alcoholic” in an accusatory tone. If they had been talking about almost any other medical problem and said “he’s diabetic” or “she’s got cancer”, however, their tone would probably have been different — likely more sympathetic. This is because addiction is generally not viewed as a disease, unfortunately, but is perceived by many … Read More
The key to long term successin recovery is beginning with a solid treatment program. It is critical that you develop a solid foundation from which you can start working to get better, and proper treatment is the only way to build that foundation. Simply detoxing to break the addiction cycle cannot substitute for a longer term treatment plan, and by just detoxing and then installing yourself in a sober living you are putting … Read More
This picture reminds me of what I thought about rehab before I went
This is absolutely one of the best articles I have read about a young woman’s thought process about possibly being an alcoholic because she is not a daily drinker. She is a binge drinker, not bottoming out yet, and completely confused about how awful rehab might be, and asking “should I go to rehab?” Especially enlightening are the comments people have made … Read More
The following excerpt is from someone who is evidently Bipolar1 (more severe than Bipolar 2) and she is on drugs, as most people with mental disorders can be. People with disorders as you will see, however, can be more affected by drugs than a “normal” person on drugs. She writes “One … Read More
Just as a “normal person” — if there is such a person — might have come home after work that day and said “Honey, I just had a rough day”, or told a buddy that Friday “Man, I had a rough week”, there was a day I was saying to whomever I could find who would listen, albeit tongue in cheek, “Man, I’ve had a rough eight years”. But I meant it. Still hospitalized, I … Read More
Depression affects over 20 million people per year, or over 8% of the U.S. (defined as having at least 1 major depressive episode in the past year.) That is an unbelievable statistic in terms of it being almost 1 in 10 people. Out of the 44 million people a year affected by some mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, almost half the events involved depression.
I had heard Tony Curtis was recovering when I was still partying hard — and then he came into Bar One with two gorgeous blondes on his arm one night. We partied together for a bit, but what was kind of funny, as I had never met him before that, Jamie Lee was the first girl I ever held hands with –for two hours straight. … Read More
I just read several of the most inspiring posts by another writer yet since having been introduced to this whole blogging thing. The blog is called “Drunk in Cardiff”, authored by “The Drinker”, and subtitled “The long walk to recovery from alcoholism and depression”. Just the subtitle makes one who has been through this whole journey want to jump on his work, I believe. So at the risk of losing the 3 people who may … Read More
